Biography
Dr Hiroaki Shimokawa MD, Phd
Professor and Chairman, Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine.
He is well known for the development of animal models of coronary spasm and the identification of endothelium-derived hydrogen peroxide as an important endothelium-derived relaxing factor. He is also the pioneer for the development of extracorporeal cardiac shock wave therapy for the treatment of severe angina pectoris.
He received the Satoh Award (the Society Award) of the Japanese Circulation Society (JCS) in 1999, the Jeffrey M. Hoeg Award of the American Heart Association (AHA) in 2006, the Japan Medical Association Award in 2012, and the William Harvey Lecture Award of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) in 2014.
